FREE APPLICATION HELP
This is a pilot program to offer free assistance with application writing for playwrights who have been historically underrepresented in the field.
During a town hall at Playwrights Horizons in June 2025 about the lack of female representation in season announcements across the country, I was struck by what multiple writers had to say about application writing as a barrier to access. This kind of writing is different from playwriting and the vast majority of us are never taught how to write for applications even though they stand between us and the residencies, workshops, writers groups, and grants that we need in order to have a career.
I have applied my way into MacDowell, Yaddo, Wildacres, Hedgebrook, Fresh Ground Pepper's BRB residency (highly recommend), Jentel, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Breaking the Binary, Yale School of Drama, SPACE on Ryder Farm, a Toulmin commission, and a Playwrights Realm Writing Fellowship. I have been on the other side of the application process as a reader for Hedgebrook, Magic Theatre, the Public Theater, Sewanee Writers' Conference, PlayPenn, MIT, Breaking the Binary, Geva Theatre, and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
When I say underrepresented, I'm including gender, race, disability, deafness, etc. My goal is to help you present your work in a way that is specific to you and clear to your readers.
